Step One: Check Your Eligibility

Earning CRFDA certification requires that you pass all six component exams within a three-year period. There are no eligibility requirements to take the AMP, IM, TMP, IS and SE exams. To take the RF exam, you must be eligible under one of three pathways. Find out more about the eligibility requirements on our Exam Eligibility Requirements page.

Step Two: Complete the Application and Submit the Fee

Once you’re ready to apply for DANB’s CRFDA exam, download and review the CRFDA application packet, which includes applications for the AMP, IM, TMP, IS, SE and RF component exams. The fees to take the exams range from $100 to $300, depending on the component exam or combination of exams taken, so the cost for earning CRFDA certification can vary. Step Three: Schedule and Take the Exam

Within four weeks after your exam application is received and processed, you will receive a Test Admission Notice from DANB that contains instructions on how to schedule your test. For information on what to expect before, during and after the exam, please refer to the CRFDA application packet.

CRFDA Component Exams

  • Anatomy, Morphology and Physiology (AMP)

    The Anatomy, Morphology and Physiology (AMP) exam is one of six components of the Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) certification program. This exam can only be taken on its own. Successful completion of the AMP exam leads to a certificate of knowledge-based competency. The AMP exam application is included in the CRFDA application packet. Following are details about the AMP exam:

    • 105 multiple-choice questions
    • 80 minutes testing time
    • $175 exam fee (includes a $50 nonrefundable application fee)
    • No eligibility requirements apply

  • Impressions (IM)

    The Impressions (IM) exam is one of six components of the Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) certification program. This exam may be taken on its own or together with the Temporaries (TMP) exam. Successful completion of the IM exam leads to a certificate of knowledge-based competency. The IM exam application is included in the CRFDA application packet. Following are details about the IM exam:

    • 80 multiple-choice questions
    • 60 minutes testing time
    • $100 exam fee (includes a $50 nonrefundable application fee)
    • No eligibility requirements apply

  • Temporaries (TMP)

    The Temporaries (TMP) exam is one of six components of the Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) certification program. This exam may be taken on its own or together with the Impressions (IM) exam. Successful completion of the TMP exam leads to a certificate of knowledge-based competency. The TMP exam application is included in the CRFDA application packet. Following are details about the TMP exam:

    • 80 multiple-choice questions
    • 60 minutes testing time
    • $100 exam fee (includes a $50 nonrefundable application fee)
    • No eligibility requirements apply

  • Isolation (IS)

    The Isolation (IS) exam is one of six components of the Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) certification program. This exam may be taken on its own or together with the Sealants (SE) and Restorative Functions (RF) exams. Successful completion of the IS exam leads to a certificate of knowledge-based competency. The IS exam application is included in the CRFDA application packet. Following are details about the IS exam:

    • 60 multiple-choice questions
    • 45 minutes testing time
    • $100 exam fee (includes a $50 nonrefundable application fee)
    • No eligibility requirements apply

  • Sealants (SE)

    The Sealants (SE) exam is one of six components of the Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) certification program. This exam may be taken on its own or together with the IS and RF exams. (The SE exam is also a component of the Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant [CPFDA] certification program.) Successful completion of the SE exam leads to a certificate of knowledge-based competency. The SE exam application is included in the CRFDA application packet. Following are details about the SE exam:

    • 50 multiple-choice questions
    • 45 minutes testing time
    • $100 exam fee (includes a $50 nonrefundable application fee)
    • No eligibility requirements apply

  • Restorative Functions (RF)

    The Restorative Functions (RF) exam is one of six components of the Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) certification program. This exam may be taken on its own or together with the Isolation (IS) and Sealants (SE) exams. Before taking the RF exam, you must meet eligibility requirements and submit appropriate documentation. The CRFDA application packet includes the RF application and additional information about eligibility requirements. Following are details about the RF exam:

    • 105 multiple-choice questions
    • 80 minutes testing time
    • $200 exam fee
    • Eligibility and documentation requirements apply

Each state has different rules around the expanded functions dental assistants are allowed to perform and the requirements they must meet. DANB's CRFDA and CPFDA certifications are national, voluntary credentials that may or may not be recognized in your state.
