DANB’s COA exam consists of two component exams: OA and ICE.

Step One: Check Your Eligibility

There are eligibility requirements for taking the full COA exam and OA component exam. There are no eligibility requirements, however, for taking the ICE exam. You can find eligibility requirement details by following the link below.

Step Two: Complete the Application and Submit the Fee

Once you’ve determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to take DANB’s COA exam, please download and review the COA application packet and complete the COA application. The OA and ICE component exam applications are also included in the COA application packet, should you decide to take these exams separately.

Step Three: Schedule and Take the Exam

Within four weeks after your application is received and processed, you will receive a notice from DANB that contains information on how to schedule your exam. You must earn a passing score on each component exam to earn COA certification. Please refer to the COA application packet for an overview on what to expect at the test site and any other issues regarding scheduling an exam.

COA Component Exams

  • Orthodontic Assisting (OA)

    DANB’s OA exam can be taken at the same time as the ICE exam or on its own. Further information, as well as COA and OA applications, is included in the COA application packet. Following are details about the OA exam:

    • 210 multiple-choice questions
    • 2 ¾ hours testing time
    • $250 stand-alone exam fee
    • Eligibility requirements apply

  • Infection Control (ICE)

    DANB’s ICE exam can be taken at the same time as the OA component exam or on its own. Successful completion of the ICE exam leads to a certificate of knowledge-based competency. The COA and ICE exam applications are included in the COA application packet. Following are details about the ICE exam:

    • 100 multiple-choice questions
    • 1 ¼ hours testing time
    • $175 stand-alone exam fee
    • No eligibility requirements apply
