Arizona
To expose radiographs in the state of Arizona,
dental assistants must successfully complete
DANB’s Radiation Health & Safety (RHS) Component Exam and the Arizona Radiologic Proficiency Exam (AZ RAD). After both written and
clinical exams are successfully completed, DANB will issue your Arizona Radiologic Proficiency
Certificate.
A dental assistant is qualified to perform coronal polishing under the supervision of a licensed dentist
in the state of Arizona if he or she holds an Arizona Coronal Polishing Certificate. To earn this certificate, the assistant must pass the
Arizona Coronal Polishing (AZCP) Exam (Form A), pay the $30 certificate fee, and submit a completed Arizona Coronal Polishing Clinical Skills Affidavit (Form B).
The Arizona State Dental
Board of Examiners (ASBDE) Dental Practice Act states: “A dental assistant may polish the natural
and restored surfaces of the teeth under the general supervision of a dentist licensed pursuant
to this chapter if the assistant has passed an examination approved by the Board” (Section 32-1291B).
The ASBDE further defines ‘polish’: “’Polish’ means for the purpose of Article 7 only, a procedure limited
to the removal of plaque and extrinsic stain from exposed natural and restored tooth surfaces,
utilizing an appropriate rotary instrument with rubber cup or brush and polishing agent.
This procedure shall not be intended or interpreted by itself as an oral prophylaxis.”

Maryland
The state of Maryland requires education for dental assistants. It is against the Maryland
Dental Laws and Regulations to expose dental radiographs or perform expanded intra-oral
functions without being registered by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners.
Passing any DANB examination does not automatically qualify a candidate to perform these
duties. However, all candidates must pass
DANB’s Radiation Health & Safety (RHS) Component Exam. The candidate must also have
completed a minimum of 24 hours of a
Maryland Board-approved course of study in dental radiography. In order to perform
expanded intra-oral functions (general chairside or orthodontic chairside), one must have
written documentation of completing a Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners-approved
training program (minimum 35 hours) and pass the national DANB Certified Dental Assistant Exam (CDA) or national
DANB Certified Dental Orthodontic Exam
(COA). Maryland dental assistants may also choose to just be state qualified
instead of nationally certified by completing the DANB administered Maryland General Expanded Functions Exam (MDG) or Maryland General Orthodontic Expanded Functions Exam (MDO).
For additional information, contact the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners at
410/402-8500 or the Maryland State Dental Association at 410/964-2880.
The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners will not issue a state registration/certification
without being presented with a certificate of completion of a Maryland State Board of Dental
Examiners-approved program. On-the-job training is not legal in the State of Maryland.
Missouri
There are no DANB examinations required to expose radiographs or perform expanded duties
within the state of Missouri. DANB administers the
Missouri Basic Dental Assisting Skills Mastery Exam (MOB). In order for dental assistants
to perform expanded functions, they must first pass the above Basic Skills Exam or be
currently certified by DANB and then, in addition, complete a Missouri Board approved
expanded functions course, pass an approved competency examination and provide proof of
competence. For additional information concerning expanded functions and any other state
