DANB's Assessment-Based Certificate Program (ABCP): Accounts Receivable

Seat time: The estimated time to complete the course is 4 hours. Learners may take the course at their own pace; it does not need to be completed in one sitting. Learners can go back and revisit course topics after completion. Learners may only take the post-course assessment once.

Program overview
This program covers accounts receivable for the dental office. This program is intended for dental office managers, dental assistants, receptionists, hygienists and possibly dentists with varying degrees of knowledge in the financial aspects of the dental office. It is an online interactive course with an audio component. The course is self-paced and does not need to be completed in one sitting. Learners can go back and revisit course topics after completion. Learners may only take the post-course assessment once.

Program objectives
By the end of the program, learners will be able to:

  • Distinguish between accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Identify elements of an effective financial policy
  • Identify the different types of payment methods for dental treatment
  • Demonstrate how and where to introduce fee presentation as a part of the treatment plan
  • Identify the steps of posting a payment
  • Interpret accounts receivable reports and know when to run them
  • Classify the stages of billing and collections for a dental practice
  • Demonstrate the communication skills needed when collecting outstanding and delinquent payments
  • Demonstrate understanding of the relationship among financial policy manual, communication skills, appropriately matching payment options with patient financial characteristics, patient retention, patient compliance with treatment plan, and dental office profitability

DANB's ABCPs are required to earn status as a Fellow of the American Association of Dental Office Managers (FAADOM).
