The Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. depends upon the dedication and expertise of volunteers from across the country, in many different dental settings. Writing test items, serving on a DANB Exam Committee and participating in a Content Validation project are three ways many Certified Assistants take part in the betterment of DANB.

Item Writing

Item writers create the building blocks that make up a DANB examination. Their content expertise, field experience, creativity and interest generate hundreds of items annually. Those items are reviewed by test construction committees and many are accepted. Accepted items become part of a future DANB bank. This mentoring effort is rewarded in one of two ways - through continuing education hours awarded, or, through modest financial compensation. For more information on how you can become an official DANB item writer, contact

Johnna Gueorguieva, Director of Testing and Measurement
Dental Assisting National Board
444 N. Michigan Ave., Ste. 900
Chicago, IL 60611.

Please enclose a current vitae and cover letter, including your interest in writing items and your areas of dental assisting expertise. Assistants MUST be DANB certified to become a DANB item writer. DANB also accepts RDH and DDS/DMD item writer applications.

DANB Exam Committees

DANB Exam Committees are composed of experts in the field, and are made up of Certified Assistants from each specialty, registered/licensed dental hygienists, general dentists, orthodontists and oral surgeons, both practitioners and educators. Their varied backgrounds and their recognition by peers help DANB ensure the construction of valid and reliable tests. Members may serve up to two 3-4 year consecutive terms. Certified Assistants who may be interested in joining a DANB Exam Committee (as appointments become available) are encouraged to write to

Johnna Gueorguieva, Director of Testing and Measurement
Dental Assisting National Board
444 N. Michigan Ave., Ste. 900
Chicago, IL 60611.

Please enclose a current vitae and cover letter, including the name of the committee of which you wish to become a part. Assistants MUST be DANB certified to become eligible for committee appointments. DANB national test construction committees include Radiation Health and Safety, Infection Control, General Chairside Assisting, Orthodontic Assisting, and Dental Practice Management.

Content Validation Research Projects

Exam Validation projects are conducted at DANB on an annual basis. Certified Assistants from each specialty participate in this important project. Participants are asked to explore their profession by answering questions about everyday tasks that they perform. The information gathered from these research projects ensures that DANB examinations adequately relate to the real life profession they seek to examine. Volunteers who participate become eligible for continuing education, as defined by current Recertification Requirements (currently awarding 3 hours for content validation participation, a quarter of the required annual hours). Certified Assistants who desire to participate in these annual projects should write to:

Johnna Gueorguieva, Director of Testing and Measurement
Dental Assisting National Board
444 N. Michigan Ave., Ste. 900
Chicago, IL 60611.

Participants MUST be DANB certified assistants, and provide their certification number, to be eligible to participate.
