Dr. Carolyn Breen is the Chair of the Department of Allied Dental Education and Director of the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene Programs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), School of Health Related Professions (SHRP).
Dr. Breen earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree from Middlesex County College, Edison, N.J.; Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair State College, Montclair, N.J.; Master of Education degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.; and a Doctor of Education degree from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, F.L. She also earned a management certificate from Middlesex County College, Edison N.J. Her professional credentials include Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH), Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), and Registered Dental Assistant with certifications in CPR and standard first aid.
Dr. Breen’s teaching responsibilities have included multiple courses in allied dental education and in the dental component of the Bachelor of Science in Health Science (BSHS) program of the University. She participates in the development and provision of continuing education courses and has presented educational programs on both state and national levels. She has received multiple grant awards, developed protocols for clinical trials with corporate sponsors and serves on multiple University and professional association committees.
She is the Past President of the New Jersey Dental Assistants Association, served as the Chair of the Dental Assisting Section of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and is a consultant for dental hygiene and dental assisting education programs for the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). She is a member of the ADA-CODA Dental Assisting Review Committee, an executive board member of the New Jersey Dental Hygienists’ Association (NJDHA) and serves as the State Education Network liaison for NJDHA and the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA). She is a member of the Council on Education for the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA), participated in multiple text book reviews and served on advisory/editorial boards for both Contemporary Dental Assisting and Inside Dental Assisting and was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Dental Assisting National Board for a three year term.
