How Do I Study for a DANB Exam?
One of the most frequently asked questions DANB receives is, "How do I study for a DANB exam?" While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to studying for a DANB Certification or component exam, we do have several tips for finding the right plan for you.
Everyone who takes a DANB exam has a different level of training, education and experience in dental assisting. Therefore, your method of preparing for an exam should be unique to your individual needs. With this in mind, DANB has developed the following recommendations for developing a study plan.
Step One: Review the Exam Blueprint
DANB recommends that you begin preparing for an exam with an exam blueprint. DANB’s exam blueprints outline every topic that you may find on a particular exam. Review each topic and identify the areas in which you need further study. You may determine that you need to study each topic in the exam blueprint, or just concentrate on weaker areas.

Step Two: Choose Your Study Materials
After you have reviewed the exam blueprint and determined the topics you’d like to concentrate on, you will need to obtain study materials. Some of your options include:
The DALE Foundation's online courses. The DALE Foundation, the official DANB affiliate, offers interactive, self-paced online courses and study aids that can help you prepare for DANB exams, referesh your knowledge and earn CDE credits.
Textbooks and other reference materials. If you attended a dental assisting education program, your textbooks and course materials can serve as helpful study materials. DANB has also compiled a list of suggested textbooks and reference materials for you.*
*Note: A number of other companies sell dental assisting exam preparation guides containing practice questions. DANB is often asked whether these guides will help improve a candidate’s score. Because these guides were not prepared with DANB’s consultation, DANB does not endorse these products. However, some candidates have found some of these exam guides to be helpful, so DANB does not discourage their use, either. Because these guides vary in quality, it is best to use the practice exercises contained in these resources as a supplement to other types of studying and preparation.
